Horden station enters service

A new multi-million-pound station in County Durham has opened to passengers.

The first scheduled train stopped at the new Horden station on Monday, 29 June, marking the entry into service of the £10.55 million development near Peterlee.

Located on South East View, the station links the east of the county into the local, regional and national rail network and will support the wider regeneration of the area.

The development is a joint project between us, Network Rail, Northern and Story Contracting and is being funded by the council, with an additional £4.4 million from the Department of Transport’s New Stations Fund and a grant from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership.

Major economic boost

Rail industry projections suggest the station will see more than 70,000 passengers each year, once social distancing measures are lifted.

Cllr Simon Henig, Leader of the council, said: “It has been a long-held ambition to have a station at Horden so, after a number of years of hard work and commitment by ourselves and our partners, it’s fantastic that we have now welcomed the first train and the first passengers.

“This new facility will open up significant opportunities for communities across east Durham, by providing a direct transport link to Teesside, Wearside and Tyneside. And, of course, it will also make it easier for people from outside the area to travel to the east of the county, whether for business or pleasure.

“It is going to provide a major economic boost to the county and I’m sure residents and businesses will be keen to take advantage.”

Minsterial support

Transport Secretary and Northern Powerhouse Minister Grant Shapps, who visited the site at the beginning of the year, said: “Our ambitious plans to restore and revitalise the railways of the North East sits at the heart of our commitment to level up infrastructure across the country, build a railway that works for everyone, and kickstart our economy as we begin the recovery from Covid-19.

“I’ve seen first-hand how the new Horden Station will improve connectivity for thousands of people, easing congestion in Durham and enabling quick, convenient travel between Newcastle and Middlesbrough.”

Simon Clarke MP, Minister for Regional Growth and Local Government said: “We want to improve connectivity across the North East in all its forms as part of our mission to level up every part of our country.

“The opening of Horden station is an important step for the local community – bringing new opportunities for people and businesses across County Durham. It’s a great example of how our multi-billion-pound Local Growth Fund is ensuring that essential, local projects get the backing they need.”

Opening event postponed

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the official opening event for the station has been postponed and will take place when it is safe for it to do so.

Passengers using Horden Station are reminded of government guidance to consider all other forms of transport before using public transport. They are also reminded that everyone using public transport in England must wear a face covering unless they are exempt.

Anyone without a legitimate reason to visit the station may be refused access in order to ensure the safety of staff and passengers.

Helen Golightly, Chief Executive of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (North East LEP), said: “Improved travel connections open up both leisure, employment and business opportunities which is why we were keen to support the development of Horden Rail Station by investing £3.34m of Local Growth Fund funding.

Work continued despite pandemic

Work on the station began in January and, thanks to changes to working practices in the light of Government guidance on coronavirus, has continued during the lockdown period.

Enhanced health and safety measures and the use of Personal Protective Equipment has enabled construction teams to carry on working during the pandemic, while strict adherence to social distancing guidelines has helped protect the health of both construction workers and members of the public.

Jason Butterworth, CEO of Story Contracting, said: “Despite the challenges faced during Covid-19 towards the final months of the project, the Horden team were able to adapt and quickly implement numerous additional health and safety measures to continue the work safely. The new station looks fantastic and comes as a result of working in partnership with all involved to provide improved connections where there were no immediate rail links before.”

Thameslink staff embrace the outdoors in support of local charity

Letting nothing stand in their way, determined staff from across the Thameslink network joined forces to run, walk, jog and cycle throughout the month of June to raise money for Autism Bedfordshire.

Hailed ‘Challenge 50,’ each fundraiser had to complete 50 kilometres of their chosen form of exercise. With usual community events on hold due to the pandemic, Bernie Lee – station manager for Bedford, Flitwick and Harlington – thought it was more important than ever to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity and is thrilled that the team have beaten their £1,000 target.

She comments: “I’m a huge supporter of Autism Bedfordshire and I wanted to help them at a time when their services will be relied upon more than ever. I spread the word to colleagues and friends as well as posting on community Facebook groups to get as many people involved as I could. It was great fun and good exercise for us all and I’m really proud of the amount we’ve managed to raise.”

Adult Services Manager at Autism Bedfordshire, Sharna Raine, said: “This is a hugely difficult time for autistic people and their families and carers. Normal routine has gone out the window and that can cause real issues for those with special needs. We’ve really felt the impact of the pandemic, so we are hugely grateful to Bernie and her team for getting out there and raising awareness of Autism Bedfordshire on our behalf. I can’t thank everyone involved enough for their time and dedication.”

Earlier this year, the operator announced that Autism Bedfordshire had become an official station partner of Luton Airport Parkway. Community Engagement Officer for Govia Thameslink Railway, Andrew Chillingsworth, added: “This is part of an ongoing relationship between ourselves and the charity and we’re pleased that we can continue to offer support in these difficult times.”

Autism Bedfordshire’s services help break down the barriers to social participation for autistic people and their families by providing places where they can go and feel comfortable, accepted, and not judged by society. Major upgrade of Peckham Rye station moves closer

Improvements for passengers who use Peckham Rye station have moved a step closer this week with Network Rail receiving £1m from the Department for Transport to develop designs for a more accessible station with more capacity and better facilities for passengers.

Currently, Peckham Rye is the busiest interchange station in the entire country without step free access to platforms or accessible facilities for passengers.

Network Rail proposals aim to provide new lifts at the station, making all platforms accessible for parents with buggies, people with shopping and those with mobility issues. Accessible toilets are also part of the scope.

To allow for future growth in passengers, access to each of the platforms will be improved and the amount of space on each platform increased.

The project will consider how the station integrates with the surrounding public realm, particularly the new Station Square, providing better access into the station and a much larger gateline to ease passenger flow.

Andrew Wood, Lead Development Manager, Network Rail, said: “Peckham Rye station is the busiest interchange station in the country without lifts, making it difficult for some passengers to use the station. Passenger numbers today have outgrown the original design, platforms and passageways being too narrow, leading to overcrowding at peaks times.

“We want to make the station accessible to all passengers, improve the overall journey experience, make the station safer and provide capacity for long-term growth.

“We are committed to working closely with train operators, rail passengers, Southwark Council, the Arch Company and the local community to take these proposals forward. Over the next 15 months we will be holding online workshops to involve interested parties in crafting the designs.”

Paul Best, Govia Thameslink Railway’s Senior Project Manager, said: “Having worked with Network Rail and the local community for over a year since Peckham Rye was designated a priority station for capacity, accessibility and safety improvements, we are delighted that the funding to design a development scheme has been signed off.

“The transformation envisaged will make this important station fit for 21st century travel, with huge benefits for everyone who uses it, and especially our passengers with mobility difficulties.”

Southeastern’s Passenger Services Director David Wornham said: “We’re always wanting to do more for our passengers and work with Network Rail to improve the facilities at our stations and make them as accessible as possible. Peckham Rye will become much easier to use for all of our passengers as a result of this work.”

Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Growth, Development and Planning, said: “As work begins on the Peckham Station Square, it is good to know that this will be complemented by these much-needed improvements to the station. Together the works will create a welcoming new gateway to the town, which is already becoming a popular destination for people looking for its fantastic cultural and social offers.”

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and the Climate Emergency, said: “This is great news for Peckham. These improvements have been desperately needed for many years and so it is good to hear Network Rail is now committing funding to this busy station, especially as we continue to look at more sustainable transport to improve air quality across the borough.”

GB Railfreight announce deal with DB Cargo for Class 60 maintenance

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has announced a new three-year deal with fellow rail freight company DB Cargo UK to undertake the maintenance of ten Class 60 locomotives as well as providing technical in-field support.

The agreement will see GBRf’s engineering team work closely with DB Cargo UK to drive locomotive performance and provide professional engineering support.

The focus of the contract will be undertaking regular maintenance in line with contracted KPIs whilst driving reliability improvements.

The Class 60 locomotives which have entered service will allow heavier and longer trains to run. This brings environmental benefits as longer trains are more efficient.  The main duties of the locomotives will be hauling biomass to power stations.

Region & Route: Anglia

Network Rail, on behalf of Greater Anglia, has started work to install red light safety enforcement (RLSE) cameras at 13 level crossings across Anglia.

Like speed cameras, RLSE cameras can identify vehicles that fail to stop at level crossings when the road traffic lights are flashing red and capture this evidence to support legal action.

Offenders are automatically notified of their offence and depending on the severity of the offence different levels of enforcement are applied. This could be a driver’s awareness course, £100 fine and 3 points on their licence, or a prosecution case may be pursued.

Motorists are once again being reminded that jumping the lights at level crossings can have catastrophic consequences and they not only risk their own lives, but also those of train drivers and their passengers.

Daniel Fisk, Network Rail Public and Passenger Health and Safety Manager for the Anglia route, said: “Level crossings pose a very real safety risk. These cameras are a proven, cost-effective way to improve safety and encourage motorists not to take unnecessary risks when crossing the railway.

“Knowing that jumping the lights or swerving the barriers at a level crossing will almost certainly result in a prosecution is enough to make most drivers think twice.

“This isn’t about money. For us, the perfect scenario is to have everyone cross the railway safely with no penalties issued.”

Matt Wakefield, Head of safety, security and sustainability at Greater Anglia, said: “The work being undertaken will be of benefit to everyone as it will increase the levels of safety around our network.”

As an extra deterrent, signs will be installed to warn motorists they could be caught on camera.

The cameras are part of a wider investment to improve level crossing safety across the increasingly busy rail network.

This work is being funded by Greater Anglia to allow more services to potentially run in future.

Work on £1.5 billion investment into Midland Main Line continues – Passengers urged to check before travelling

Network Rail is continuing with work on a £1.5billion upgrade of the Midland Main Line which will improve journeys for all those using the route. 

On 4/5 and 11/12 July, work will take place to commission and test two new substations on the route between Bedford and Ampthill. This work is a vital part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade and will help to improve resilience on the railway, as well as provide the power needed to allow more trains to run in the future.  

Work will also take place to improve the track on the route, as well as to install further overhead line equipment. Overhead line equipment carries 25,000 volts of electricity, enough to seriously injure or kill anyone coming into contact with it. Network Rail has launched a hard-hitting safety campaign, Always On, which warns people of the dangers of trespassing on the tracks, particularly where the railway is electrified. To allow the work over these weekends to take place safely, some lines on the Midland Main Line will be closed. Network Rail, East Midlands Railway and Govia Thameslink Railway are urging passengers to check before travelling whilst this work takes place.

  • Saturday, 4 July – No trains will be able to call at Market Harborough or Leicester after 22:00. A bus replacement service will run between Kettering, Market Harborough and Leicester and between Leicester and Loughborough 
  • Sunday, 5 July – No trains will be able to call at Market Harborough or Leicester. A bus replacement service will run between Kettering, Market Harborough and Leicester and between Leicester and Loughborough 
  • Saturday, 11 July – Trains to/from Sheffield and Nottingham will start/terminate at Market Harborough. Rail replacement buses will run between Market Harborough and Luton, and trains operated by Thameslink will run between Luton and St Pancras.
  • Sunday, 12 July – Trains to/from Sheffield and Nottingham will start/terminate at Corby, and will not call at Leicester or Market Harborough. Rail replacement buses will run between Loughborough and Luton and between Corby and Luton. Trains operated by Thameslink will run between Luton and St Pancras.

Passengers are urged to continue to avoid public transport where possible. Those who do need to travel are advised to check their journey ahead of time via National Rail Enquiries or eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk or thameslinkrailway.com. Those who are using public transport should wear face coverings to protect themselves and others, however, some passengers are exempt, including young children, people with disabilities, both visible and hidden, and those with breathing difficulties.
