£1m rail investment to keep passengers on-track

Network Rail has successfully delivered more than £1m of work to renew track and refurbish a key junction on Scotland’s Railway in Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire.

Between Saturday July 17 and Monday July 20, engineers worked to renew 1.5km of track through Milliken Park station in Johnstone.

More than 6,000tons of ballast and over 2,000 new sleepers were installed over the three days to replace aging track and keep the line in good condition.

Further south, near Dalry, work was carried out on a key junction to refurbish several sets of points – rails which move to transfer trains from one line of track to another.

The lines between Ayrshire and Glasgow are key routes for passengers and freight traffic and this investment is part of a long-term plan to refurbish and renew rail infrastructure across Scotland.

Between 2019 and 2024, Network Rail Scotland will invest more than £4bn in maintaining, enhancing and operating Scotland’s Railway.

Alan Ross, Network Rail Scotland’s director of engineering and asset management, said: “Renewing and maintaining our railway is vital to the continued running of a safe and reliable service for our customers.

“The line into Ayrshire is a key route for both passenger and freight services and this work will help to ensure we can continue to keep Scotland’s Railway, and those who rely on it, moving.”

Avanti West Coast launches customised real-time journey updates onboard

  •  Train operator develops new onboard service that updates customers on journey status
  • ‘Track My Train’ keeps customers informed onboard at the tap of a screen
  • Customers can track their train in real-time using own device

Avanti West Coast has launched a new passenger information service giving real-time journey updates to customers at their fingertips.

The onboard service called ‘Track My Train’, enables customers to follow the progress of the train they’re travelling on in real-time, using their own personal device.

Accessed exclusively through Avanti West Coast’s Wi-Fi homepage at the tap of a screen, Track My Train brings together live updates of a train’s journey and onward connections, tailoring it to each customer’s journey.

Developed in partnership with transport infotainment specialist, GoMedia, the onboard service uses live data from industry systems to show exactly where a train is, estimated arrival times along the route, any disruptions, and departure details for other rail services – all in one place. Therefore, customers can check the status of their journey without having to switch between screens or filter information.

To stay up-to-date onboard customers simply connect their device to the Wi-Fi and select the Track My Train icon. The tool auto-populates information relating specifically to the customer’s journey – helping to make the end-to-end experience more seamless.

The technology is the latest initiative to be rolled out across Avanti West Coast’s fleet of Pendolino and Super Voyager trains. It follows on from the introduction of Avanti Media – a free on-board entertainment service that allows customers to stream movies, TV box-sets, games, magazines and newspapers to their personal device.

Bob Powell, Customer Proposition Director at Avanti West Coast, said: “We know how important it is for our customers to stay informed during their journey and Track My Train helps to do just that. This new service makes it easier for customers to follow their train’s progress while onboard, by providing concise and reliable information, tailored to journeys in real-time, at the tap of a screen.

“It has been great to work with GoMedia to develop this technology and we’re excited to offer it as part of our latest initiative to enhance the overall experience when travelling with us.”

Roger Matthews, managing director at GoMedia, adds: “Providing passengers with real-time information about their individual route, including connections and stations, creates a truly personalised experience, giving users control over their entire journey, door-to-door. This is now more important than ever with changing restrictions on the way we use public transport.”

Special delivery! Govia Thameslink Railway kicks off parcel pickup partnership with Amazon

Thanks to a new partnership between Govia Thameslink Railway and Amazon, customers will soon be able to pick up parcels using Amazon Hub, an automated click and collect service making online shopping even easier for customers travelling on the SouthernGreat Northern and Thameslink routes.

Offering a delivery alternative and greater convenience for rail users who are not at home during the day, close to 150 Amazon Hub Lockers will roll out over the next six months starting at stations on the Southern network. Installation at Thameslink and Great Northern stations will follow in the autumn with all Lockers to be installed by December 2020.

Amazon Hub Lockers are secure, self-service kiosks that provide customers of the online retailer an alternative delivery option to pick up and return their Amazon packages.

GTR’s Commercial Director, David Gornall, said: “The installation of Amazon Hub Locker across our network adds another amenity to make life easier for our busy customers. Although a large majority of the UK is working from home, not everyone can be in for deliveries – especially key workers or other industries now back at work. Our new partnership gives passengers the opportunity to pick-up their Amazon packages on the go as part of their everyday journey.”

Doug Gurr, Country Manager for Amazon.co.uk, said: “Amazon will go where our customers are and deliver where and when they need us. Rolling out Amazon Hub Lockers with Govia Thameslink Railway is a great opportunity to provide a seamless shopping and delivery experience for our joint customers.”

Shipping to an Amazon Hub Locker at a Govia Thameslink Railway station is easy, secure and available at no additional cost. During checkout, customers will select a Locker at their chosen train station as their shipping address. Once their package is ready for pickup, customers will receive an e-mail along with a barcode that they’ll be able to scan at the locker, allowing for a contactless way to pick up their package.

The below stations are the first to receive an Amazon Hub Locker with additional locations coming soon.

Passengers urged to check before they travel over August Bank Holiday as vital work planned for South West London and Surrey

  • Network Rail engineering works will affect some services in SW London and Surrey as track and other equipment set for renewal
  • Passengers should check their journey before they travel.
  • Passengers should travel safely over the forthcoming August Bank Holiday, those who are travelling by rail should wear a face covering unless they are exempt. Passengers should maintain a distance from other passengers wherever possible

Network Rail is carrying out planned engineering works this August Bank Holiday to maintain and upgrade the railway for passengers which will affect some train services in South West London and Surrey.

The forthcoming August Bank Holiday weekend – which takes place between Friday 29 to Monday 31 August – will see upgrades between Epsom and Dorking, Hounslow and Twickenham, as well as replacing the footbridge at Ashford station.  This work will affect SWR and Southern services in these areas.

Passengers should check their journey before they travel.  Due to the amended timetable currently in operation across the network, train times may not be uploaded into journey times until closer to the work. However, summaries of the amended timetable, and bus replacement services are available at: https://www.southwesternrailway.com/August

Network Rail is also reminding passengers to continue following Government advice around the safe use of public transport, including the wearing of face coverings, and maintaining social distancing where possible.

Mark Killick, Network Rail Wessex route director, said: “This bank holiday, to make sure our railway is at its very best when we emerge from this pandemic, we are continuing to work on and invest in the rail network to make it more reliable for passengers.

“That means some journeys may be different, so please travel safely and check your journey before leaving home.”

Alan Penlington, customer experience director for South Western Railway, said: “These works are vital to maintaining and improving the railway. We are working to keep everyone moving this bank holiday, with replacement buses in operation.

“We’re asking our customers to plan ahead, and follow the latest Government guidance so we can all travel safely.”

Details of the work taking place this August Bank Holiday:

  • Upgrades to points (which help train move between tracks) at Whitton Junction; including upgrades to the station. We’re also continuing work on the new SWR train depot at Feltham which will affect services between Hounslow and Twickenham and Twickenham and Staines. The work begins on the morning of 29 August and is due to finish early morning on 1 September when train services will resume.
  • Carrying out repairs and maintenance to the track, and strengthening a bridge at Station Road, Leatherhead between the morning of 30 August and morning of 31 August. The work affects services between Epsom and Dorking and between Dorking and Effingham Junction.
  • Work to replace the footbridge at Ashford station in Surrey and resurfacing work to the platform and car parks. During the work,  the station  is likely to be open  but passengers should check on the day they travel for the latest advice.

DB Cargo UK secures new two-year contract with Imerys

DB Cargo UK has been awarded a new, two-year contract to transport china clay for the world-leading mineral specialist, Imerys.

The soft white clay is mined in Cornwall and is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of china and porcelain, as well as being used in the making of products like paper, rubber and paint.

DB Cargo UK, one of the UK’s largest rail freight operators, operates two separate traffic flows for Imerys – from Goonbarrow and Branch to Fowey Docks and from Cornwall to Cliffe Vale in Stoke.

Every week the rail freight company transports in the region of 7,200 tonnes of china clay for Imerys in covered hopper wagons – this removes around 11,000 lorries a year off Cornwall’s road network.

DB Cargo UK’s Head of Sales Roger Neary said:

“We are proud of our long-standing relationship with Imerys and look forward to continuing to provide them with high quality services in the South West and beyond.

“Rail freight provides a faster, more efficient and environmentally-friendly method of transporting materials of this kind, reducing congestion on the UK’s already congested road network,” he added.

Imerys UK Hub & BA CSR Director Ashley Shopland, said:

“Imerys is pleased to have secured ongoing rail movements for its products in and around the St Austell area and up to Cliffe Vale, combined with a continuation of the strong relationship that it has built over many years with DB Cargo UK.”

If ScotRail trains can cover their face, so can you

Two iconic high-speed Inter7City trains have covered their face to help raise awareness about the mandatory wearing of face coverings on ScotRail trains and in stations.

ScotRail has applied custom face covering vinyl to the power-cars of two of its Inter7City trains, which operate on routes connecting Scotland’s seven cities.

The wearing of face coverings was made mandatory on Monday 22 June. Since then, around 90 per cent of customers overall have complied with the requirement which keeps themselves and others safe.

However, the train operator estimates that only 60 per cent – and in some cases as little as 40 per cent – of customers traveling on some routes are covering their face.

Some customers are also removing their face covering once on board trains.

ScotRail has given away more than 20,000 free face coverings to help people get used to the new normal for rail travel.

Staff across Scotland’s Railway have also been provided with face coverings, masks, and visors to help keep them, and customers, safe.

Customers can play their part by following ScotRail’s five rules for safer travel, which are:

  • Do not travel if you feel unwell or have a temperature.
  • Travel away from the main commuting times (0700 – 0900 and 1600 – 1830) wherever possible, as trains will be busiest around then. The earliest and latest trains serve key workers, like NHS and care home staff.
  • If you think it’s not safe to board a train, don’t do it and wait for another service.
  • Wear a face mask or covering and, where possible, maintain physical distancing.
  • Be patient. You might not be able to board your first choice of train, as physical distancing means most seats need to be left empty.

Customers can also expect an increase in the time it takes to buy a ticket at a station and board a train, and there may be occasions over the coming months when boarding their normal train may not be possible in busier times. Buying tickets in advance through the ScotRail app or website will reduce the time to wait.

Syeda Ghufran, ScotRail Engineering Director, said:

“While it’s encouraging to see that most people across the country are following the requirement and covering their face when travelling, we need everyone to take personal responsibility for their travel choices.

“The mandatory wearing of face coverings helps keep you, your fellow customers, and our people safe.

“By applying a face covering to two of our iconic high-speed Inter7City trains, we hope to help raise more awareness about the mandatory wearing of face coverings on our trains and in our stations.”

Let’s travel safely this summer as GWR announces enhanced getaway services

Additional train services for Devon and Cornwall have been announced from this weekend to help people returning to rail travel do so safely, but customers are reminded to consider others and wear a face covering, and to wash their hands regularly.

As more people return to rail after the easement of lockdown restrictions, train operator GWR has been working hard to welcome people back on to its services.

This includes increased cleaning regimes and the use of a virucidal spray; extra staff at key stations to offer help and guidance; and processes in place to help customers maintain a safe distance where possible such as restricting the number of reservations available.

GWR Interim Managing Director Matthew Golton said:

“As the lockdown eases and government advice on travel changes, we are seeing more people coming back to the railway.

“Staff across GWR have been working hard and we continue to take sensible steps to look after ourselves and each other, and to start welcoming people more widely back on to the railway.

“An awful lot of hard work has been done to make sure people feel that they can travel safely, and that includes running more trains and carriages to make extra room.

“From Saturday we will re-introduce even more services into our timetable as more people return to the train. Please do be considerate of others and wear a face covering unless you are exempt, be mindful of others; plan ahead; avoid busy times where possible; and do take advantage of the extra hand-washing facilities we have had installed.”

To further maximise space on board, from this weekend GWR has announced more trains for Devon and Cornwall, including restoring a significant number of direct London to Cornwall services.

The enhancements will mean three additional services from London Paddington on Saturdays from this Saturday [25 July]. Two will run to Plymouth and the third directly to Paignton, restoring direct services to Torbay in time for the summer. There will also be four more round trips (8 services) on local trains between Exeter/Plymouth and Penzance.

During the week, the train operator will extend four London services through to Penzance, restoring direct London services to Cornwall. A further six round trips (12 services) from London Paddington will operate: two running to Exeter, one to Plymouth and three running direct to Paignton. In addition to the London services, there will also be a further three round trips (6 services) between Exeter/Plymouth and Penzance to provide the extra capacity needed to support safer travel through the summer.

GWR is encouraging customers to travel safely this summer. People are reminded to:

• wear a face covering
• travel at quieter times where possible
• wash your hands more regularly
• buy tickets online, on a smart card or by using the GWR app
