Metrolink update

Metrolink services were disrupted earlier, after a number of trams were withdrawn from service.
Recently installed equipment, used to monitor vehicles, detected damage to some pantographs – which connects to the overhead line to power the trams.

The operator briefly paused services in order to allow for a full inspection of the fleet. As a result five trams were withdrawn for further inspection and repair.

Work is underway to investigate the cause of the damage.

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “I’d like to apologise to anyone whose journey was disrupted today, after the operator took the decision, rightly, to briefly pause services in order to inspect all trams on the network.

“We’ve recently installed some equipment that is specifically intended to monitor the trams and identify any issues, which is how the damage was first identified.

“While there was, regrettably, some disruption, the operator has worked hard to minimise this.

“I’d like to reassure passengers that their safety is our top priority and we’ve withdrawn some trams from service for repair and to limit any further disruption and damage to other vehicles.

“Anyone planning to travel this afternoon should check before they travel and plan their journey in advance.

“Anyone using public transport is reminded of the need to follow the latest safety advice, such as wearing a face covering, unless exempt, washing and sanitising their hands and keeping a distance of at least 1m from other passengers where possible.
